Johann Kupezky (1666-1740) (attrib.), Portrait of Johann Georg II. Prince of Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693) in challenging, warlike posture with hand on saber. His power and independence are particularly emphasized by the open purse and the gold coins beside him. After the death of his father in 1660, George II, from the House of Ascanians, took over the government in Anhalt-Dessau. He entered Brandenburg military service, was appointed field marshal general by the Great Elector in 1670, and concluded the alliance between Emperor Leopold I and Brandenburg in Vienna in June 1672. In 1683 he was sent to the emperor in Passau to hold out the prospect of Brandenburg's help against the Turks, but to advise against a war against France. Provenance von Anhalt, oil/canvas, mounted, restored, blemish lower right, 94 x 74 cm
