A MONUMENTAL AND FINE ICON SHOWING THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST Greek, 17th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. Christ standing in frontal position in the River Jordan between swimming fish and two river gods, snakes or dragons appearing from below His feet in an allusion to Psalm 73:13: “You divided the sea by your might: you broke the heads of the dragons in the waters”, John the Baptist to the left, four angels with veiled hands to the right. The Holy Spirit appearing as a dove, descending from a segment of heaven. On the left the prophet Isaia appearing behind the rocks, holding an open scroll. Losses to the borders, partially restored. 68 x 51.2 cm. Literature: Golden light. Masterpieces of the Art of the Icon, Kononklijk Museum voor schone kunsten Antwerpen, 1988, Nr. 83.
