Bukhara Nim Suzani
144 x 101 cm (4' 9" x 3' 4")
Uzbekistan, second half 19th century
Condition: very good, minor stained
Silk on cotton

Amazingly well-preserved colours are what first strikes one about this classic silk embroidery. A perfectly drawn border encompasses the lively garden in the centre. The lattice design filled with an abundance of different flowers is probably based on Indian Mughal influence.
There is a water jug hidden in the field on the left-hand side signifying not only a necessity for the gardener but fertility in general as well. These precious embroideries are dowry pieces and were the pride of the bride. The leaves in the border swing elegantly around the flowers which are drawn either in bird's-eye view or from the side.
The contrast between the border and the field - the perfect surround of the flower bed and the abundance inside - is one of the remarkable features. Suzani of this quality are immensely giving: the longer one looks at them the more they reveal.
We will point out the bird hiding between leaves of the main border in the upper left but finding the second water jug we will leave to you. These valuable embroideries were dowry pieces and the pride of the bride.

Estimate: € 6000 - 9000
