Salor Torba
142 x 51 cm (4' 8" x 1' 8")
Turkmenistan, early 19th century
Condition: very good according to age, mostly good pile, silk highlights korrodiert, beide rechten Ecken slightly restauriert, slight signs of use, minor small repairs
Published: „Gewebt und geknüpft V, die Pracht der Saloren", Georg Butterweck, 2013, plate 25
and HALI 1999, Nr. 104, S. 113
Warp: wool, weft: wool, pile: wool with silk highlights

Although the kejebe pattern is also used by the Saryk on torbas, the Salor weavings are the older, more attractive and more desirable variant. This example has less silk used in the pile, which tends to be considered a sign of greater age, and the degree of its corrosion seems to confirm this assertion.
There are five full güls and two half güls cut off by the side borders; some examples have a full six güls across the field. While the field design of this type is fairly consistent, with the borders being the area in which we see the most variance, in this example the hooks at the top of the kejebe arches meet and create a small reserve in which a small white diamond appears. This is unlike most other examples. The pile height and deep colouration combine to give this torba a crispness that is unmatched in other examples.

Estimate: € 15000 - 20000
