Konya prayer rugs come in many forms and indeed this may well reflect the religious importance of the city within Anatolia. The steeply stepped mirror protrudes into a brushed-green ground in which two samovars point towards the apex of the niche. The red field is filled with stars and tribal devices as well as the green hanging lamp above which there are implied rays of light. This freedom of form in the field is reflected in the border, which has a loose interpretation of a budding flower form on an orange ground that is always associated with the greater Konya region.
The best Konya prayer rugs are highly sought after by collectors as they express the exuberant use of colour and individuality of composition that characterises Anatolian weaving at its best.
