MEROVINGIAN HIGH KARAT GOLD FITTING OF SCABBARD WITH RED GARNET CLOISONNE
Ca. AD 500 - 700. A gold scabbard fitting decorated with a cloisonné inlay of red garnet. The front panel is shaped as a rounded arch and divided into compartments by gold cell walls, forming a symmetrical design of two central circles vertically aligned within a framework of surrounding geometric fields. Each garnet is carefully cut to match its cell. A raised beaded border encloses the composition and runs along the outer edge. The body is hollow and oval in cross-section.Size: 22mm x 18mm; Weight: 10gProvenance: London collection; Ex. Mayfair collection, acquired from an Ancient Art gallery; formerly acquired on the London art market pre-2000.
